May 5. Commemoration of the Holy and the Great Martyr Irene.

  Irene was a princess of noble descent. She was converted by Paul’s disciple, Timothy. The Emperor Justinian built a magnificent church in Constantinople in her honor.

“Then he brought them out and said, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ And they said, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus and you and your household will be saved’ ” (Acts 16:30-31).
