| Alexandria, located in Egypt by the Mediterranean Sea, was first
evangelized by St. Mark. This See was recognized as the leading See in all
of Africa. Among the great saints of the Church to come from this See are
Athanasius and Cyril of Alexandria. Famous for its Catechetical school and
large library, Alexandria was also a hotbed of heresy.
As was true of other major Sees, Alexandria developed its own liturgy, probably based upon the Divine Liturgy of St. Mark. This liturgy is still the basis for the modern liturgies of the Churches of the Alexandrian tradition. Contact the Webmaster |
