Join us and thousands of others across our nation as we stand in a prayerful and peaceful public witness on behalf of abortion's many victims. Since 1973, over 55 million preborn American citizens, almost one-third of our current generation, have been killed by surgical abortions, while many others have been killed by chemical abortifacient birth controls. Today, millions of mothers and fathers live with anguishing regret for their abortion decisions. Let us pray together for an end to abortion. Signs are provided. Vocation Awareness. It is a great joy for priests to work in company with Christ and see Him restoring life to others in so many ways through their ministry. We can see an example of this with Christ’s disciples in today’s Gospel. Saint Paul points out that though his ministry is difficult, he rejoices in being a “father” to the people the Lord has commended to him. We are in great need for dedicated priests of this nature to be “fathers” to the people of our parishes. Please pray for vocations and encourage any potential candidates you may notice.

Vocation View. Saint Paul urges Christian readers to live a life of communion, in mutual love, and in the love that God has given us. Jesus teaches us the importance and implications of that life of loving communion. Who shall preach and teach it to us today? Pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and monastic life and encourage possible candidates.

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Readings for Sunday, October 7, 2018.
Epistle Galatians 1:11-19.
Prokimenon (Tone 3)
Sing praise to our God, sing praise! Sing praise to our King, sing praise!
Stichon: All you peoples, clap your hands! Shout to God with cries of gladness!

A Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians:
Brethren, I give you to understand that the Good News that was announced to you by me is not of man. For I did not receive it from man, nor was it taught to me [by man], but I received it by a revelation from Jesus Christ. For you have heard of the way I lived before in Judaism: how I persecuted the Church of God and ravaged it beyond measure. And I advanced in Judaism above many of my contemporaries in my nation, showing much more zeal for the traditions of my fathers. But when it pleased him who from my mother’s womb set me apart and called me by his grace, to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the Gentiles, immediately, without taking counsel with flesh and blood and without going up to Jerusalem to those who were appointed apostles before me, I retired into Arabia and again returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went to Jerusalem to see Peter, and I remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles, except James, the Lord’s brother.

ALLELUIA (Tone 3)
In you, O Lord, I have hoped: let me never be put to shame.
In your justice, save me and deliver me.
Stichon: Be for me a protecting God, a sheltering house to save me.

Luke 7:11-16
The Holy Gospel According To St. Luke the Evangelist.
At that time it came to pass that Jesus went to a town called Naim; and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. And as he drew near the gate of the town, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large gathering from the town was with her. And the Lord, seeing her, had compassion on her, and said to her, “Do not weep.” And he went up and touched the stretcher; and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to thee, arise.” And he who was dead, sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. But fear seized upon all, and they began to glorify God, saying, “A great prophet has risen among us.” and “God has visited his people.”

Epistle Readings

Guidelines for Reading in Church

  1. Relax and pray before reading.
  2. Make sure to read slowly and clearly.
  3. Look up a few times during the reading of the Epistle. The best time is after the end of each paragraph, but other times are also good.
  4. Slow down at a comma and pause briefly at a period.
  5. Make sure you inflect your voice if there is a question mark at the end of the sentence. ‘Isn’t that right?’ (Voice goes up slightly at the end.)
  6. When practicing at home stand 20 feet from the person who is listening to you because it is very important to project when you are reading in a Church.
  7. If you do not know what a word means look it up in a dictionary.
  8. If you are not sure how to pronounce a word, look at the pronunciation guide in a dictionary or ask someone.
  9. Do not worry about making a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes. Stay call and keep reading.
  10. Keep re-reading until you feel comfortable.
