2017-01-29-Bulletin for Sunday

Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Bulletin. Sunday, January 29, 2017. Sunday of the Canaanite Woman.

January 29. Transfer of the Remains of the Holy Hieromartyr Ignatius the God-Bearer. Ignatius was martyred in Rome at the beginning of the second century. His remains were later transferred to Antioch, the place of his birth. He is remembered mostly for his celebrated “Letter to the Romans” concerning the acceptance of his forthcoming martyrdom.

Your 2017 donation envelopes have been mailed. This year we are using a company that will mail your Sunday donation envelopes to your home every two months. These envelopes are dated with your envelope number on the back. The mailout also contains the January and February Church calendar.

January 20, 2017. The full text of Pope Francis’ Message to US President Donald Trump. The Honorable Donald Trump, President of the United States of America, The White House, Washington. Upon your inauguration as the forty-fifth President of the United States of America, I offer you my cordial good wishes and the assurance of my prayers that Almighty God will grant you wisdom and strength in the exercise of your high office. At a time when our human family is beset by grave humanitarian crises demanding far-sighted and united political responses, I pray that your decisions will be guided by the rich spiritual and ethical values that have shaped the history of the American people and your nation’s commitment to the advancement of human dignity and freedom worldwide. Under your leadership, may America’s stature continue to be measured above all by its concern for the poor, the outcast and those in need who, like Lazarus, stand before our door. With these sentiments, I ask the Lord to grant you and your family, and all the beloved American people, his blessings of peace, concord and every material and spiritual prosperity. FRANCISCUS PP.

The Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Community offer our condolences to the family of the servant of God, Hani Elias Tawil who reposed in the Lord on January 23, 2017 in New Jersey. We extend our condolences to the entire family and in particular his wife Olga, his children Michelle del Presto and Malik Tawil, his siblings Edward, Joseph (Grace Debsi), Ramzi (Majda Nesheiwat), Angelle (George Karma), Nicki Kraus, and Adel Tawil.

Holy Cross Church Sunday School (Eastern Christian Formation). For more Sunday School events, check the Holy Cross Church calendar. Sunday School resumed January 8, 2017.

Vocation View. Saint Paul urges Christian readers to live a life of communion, in mutual love, and in the love that God has given us.  Jesus teaches us the importance and implications of that life of loving communion. Who shall preach and teach it to us today? Pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and monastic life and encourage possible candidates.

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Freed Theater at Christ Cathedral Campus. 13280 Chapman Ave. Garden Grove, CA 92840. Thérèse: The Story of a Soul is a face-to-face encounter with St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the most beloved saint of modern times. In this one-woman performance starring actress Audrey Ahern, Thérèse speaks directly to the audience, with humor, grace and humility. This is not the saccharine story of the “Little Flower,” but an honest, loving portrait of a real girl who struggled with anxieties, but overcame these obstacles by trusting in God. February 19, 20, 21. A message from Habitat for Humanity-Volunteer Opportunity for Youth. We need 500 volunteers, ranging from youth and up, to transfer True Value Hardware's trade show at the Anaheim Convention Center that ends on Sunday, 2/19. Their products will need to be transferred from the booths onto pallets (placed at each booth), wrap the loaded pallets with shipping plastic, and move on to the next booth. We are expecting about 30 truck trailers full of product valued at $1.2 million in subsequent sales. The sales could generate enough income to support the construction of approximately six Habitat homes in Orange County! That's six families that would go out reached without your help on these volunteer critical service days. The tentative volunteer shifts are as follows: Sunday 2/19 3:30 -10 p.m., Monday 2/20 8:00-1:30 p.m. and 12:30-6 p.m., and Tuesday 2/21 8:00-1:30 p.m. and 12:30-6 p.m. Lunch or dinner is provided during a shift, as appropriate, and you get a free T-shirt!

“Divine Renovation” is for pastors and parish leaders who want to renew and revitalize their parish for mission and evangelization. Participants will be led through a series of interactive reflections and exercises to help them establish a functioning leadership team that will assist the pastor in leading the parish in a new direction. We will look at how a leadership team is different from a staff team or pastoral council, and how it best functions in relation to these other groups within the parish. Each team (the pastor or parish administrator along with four to eight team members) will be led through a process to examine the essentials of common vision, team balance, healthy conflict, trust and vulnerability. Pastors and team members will receive tools and insights to form or become a healthier and more effective leadership team. Participants should read or be familiar with the key insights of Fr. James Mallon’s book, Divine Renovation: Bringing Your Parish from Maintenance to Mission. Please call the Holy Cross Church office to get a free copy.
Fr. James Mallon, a priest of the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth in Nova Scotia, Canada, currently serves as Pastor of Saint Benedict Parish and is founder and Chair of the Board of the John Paul II Media Institute. Fr. Mallon is creator of the video-based catechetical series, “Catholicism 201.” In 2014, he published his first book on parish renewal, followed in 2017 with “The Divine Renovation Guidebook: A Step-by-Step Manual for Transforming Your Parish.”

Leonardo Defilippis's latest one-man stage production, VIANNEY, opens amidst the chaos of the French Revolution, a time which mirrors the secularization, materialism and anti-religious sentiment of our own day. Against this dramatic backdrop, a simple ignorant peasant priest enters the backwater town of Ars, a place where no one cares much about their faith, or sees the Church as particularly relevant. They don't expect much out of John Vianney. But then the impossible begins to happen through this unlikely shepherd – through his example, his love, and his sacrifice, the townspeople begin to change, begin to listen, and begin to pray. Readings for Sunday, January 29, 2017.
Epistle: 2 Corinthians 6:16-18; 7:1.
PROKIMENON (Tone 8)
Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them: let all round about him bring gifts to the awesome Lord!
Stichon: God is renowned in Judah; in Israel, great is his name.

A Reading From the Second Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians:
Brethren, you are the temple of the living God, as God says, “I will dwell and move among them; I will be their God and they shall be my people” (Lv. 26:11, 2) (Cf. Jer. 31:1). Wherefore, “Come out from among them, be separated, says the Lord, and touch not an unclean thing;” (Is. 52:11) “and I will welcome you in, and will be a Father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord almighty” (Cf. Hos. 1:10; Is. 43:6).
Having therefore these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of the body and of the spirit, perfecting sanctity in the fear of God.

ALLELUIA (Tone 8)
Come; let us rejoice in the Lord!
Let us sing joyfully to God our Savior!
Stichon: Let us greet his presence with thanksgiving; let us joyfully sing psalms to him.

Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28.
The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the Evangelist.

At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, "Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon."  But he did not say a word in answer to her. His disciples came and asked him, "Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us." He said in reply, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." But the woman came and did him homage, saying, "Lord, help me." He said in reply, "It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed from that hour.
