Why the Sunday Divine Liturgy should be a priority in our lives. Materialism is when we put work and making money ahead of our spiritual life. Read the full article “Sorry We’re Closed,” the Sophia Magazine editorial on pages 4 and 11 by Father Sebastian Carnazzo. Quote: “What the Jews could not do when they persecuted the first Christians in Jerusalem; what the Pagan Romans could not do when they persecuted Christians in their empire; what the Muslims could not do when they attacked Christians throughout the Middle-East; what heresies and schisms could not do when they plagued the Church; what the Ottoman Empire could not do after six centuries of occupation, and what the modern state of Israel could not do when it took control of the Holy Land, American materialism has done in just ten short years.” Where are our faith priorities?

Church Etiquette is important to keep us focused on the holiness of the House of God. Please arrive on time as those who show up late distract others. There should be no talking in church as this disrupts everyone around you and the service. There is plenty of time after church to greet and catch up with others. Cell phones should be kept in your car or turned off as to avoid phones ringing and texting. Please do not bring video games into Church, as children should get used to the prayers. Finally, despite the summer temperature, please dress modestly in Church at all times. For all ages, knee length clothing should be worn and no tank tops. Your Church clothing should always be modest and reflect the nature of the Church as a house of prayer.

Sample company dress code.
-All employees must be clean and well-groomed.
-Employees must avoid clothes with stamps that are offensive or inappropriate.
-All clothes must be work-appropriate. Clothes that are typical in workouts and outdoor activities aren’t allowed.
-All clothes must be clean and in good shape. Discernible rips, tears or holes aren’t allowed.
-All clothes must project professionalism. Clothes that are too revealing or inappropriate aren’t allowed.
-Avoid overly casual denim cuts, like cutoffs or flare jeans. Skirts should remain at knee-length.
-Nicely fitted tops and blouses, although shirts should never be tight or revealing.
Church clothing should at least meet if not exceed these guidelines.

Vocation Awareness. When Mary visited Elizabeth, she was coming to minister to her. Jesus was within her reaching out to touch Elizabeth and Elizabeth felt the presence of the Lord. Priests are called to minister in this way to the people. Today’s Epistle speaks of Christ touching people so that they can become free children of God. In the Gospel, Jesus frees two men and restores their dignity and identity as children of God. Others wanted to keep the status quo. Priests often have to face this in their ministry. Pray for your priests and pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood.

Vocation View. Saint Paul urges Christian readers to live a life of communion, in mutual love, and in the love that God has given us. Jesus teaches us the importance and implications of that life of loving communion. Who shall preach and teach it to us today? Pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and monastic life and encourage possible candidates.

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Troparion of the Holy Cross (Tone 2). O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. Strengthen our Public Authorities in every good deed and protect your nation with your Cross.
Kondakion of the Mother of God (Tone 2). O never failing Protectress of Christians and their ever present intercessor before the Creator, despise not the petitions of us sinners, but in your goodness extend your help to us who call upon you with confidence. Hasten, O Mother of God, to intercede for us, for you have always protected those who honor you.

Prayer and fasting in preparation for the feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God on August 15.
The Feast of the Dormition is preceded by a two-week fast, referred to as the Dormition Fast from August 1 to August 14. The full fast consists of abstaining from red meat, poultry, meat products, dairy products (eggs and milk products), fish, oil, and wine. On the Feast of the Transfiguration on August 6, fish, wine, and oil are allowed.
During this time we will also pray the Paraclisis on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. A Paraklesis or Supplicatory Canon in the Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Churches, is a service of supplication for the welfare of the living. It is addressed specifically to the Most Holy Theotokos whose intercessions are sought through the chanting of the supplicatory canon together with psalms, hymns, and litanies. The Great Paraklesis was composed by Emperor Theodore II Laskaris in the 13th century.

Readings for Sunday, July 9, 2017.
Epistle: Romans 10:1-10.
PROKIMENON (Tone 4)
How great are your works, O Lord!
In wisdom you have wrought them all.
Stichon: Bless the Lord, O my soul!
You are very great indeed, O Lord my God!

A Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans
Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God in their behalf is for salvation. For I bear witness to them that they have zeal for God, but a zeal that is not informed. For ignorant of God’s holiness and seeking to establish their own, they have not submitted to the sanctification offered by God. For Christ is the consummation of the Law in terms of justification for everyone who believes.
For Moses has written that the man who brings about that justification which is of the Law shall live by it. (Lv.18: 5) But the justification which is of faith says, Do not ask in your heart, who shall go up to heaven that is, -- to bring down Christ. Or, Who will descend into the abyss (Dt.30: 12) that is, to bring up Christ from the dead? But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. (Dt.30: 14) that is, the word of faith which we preach. For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is the Lord, and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. For a man believes with the heart and attains justification, but he professes his faith with his mouth and attains salvation.

ALLELUIA (Tone 4)

String your bow, go forth, reign for the sake of truth, meekness and righteousness, and your right hand shall lead you wonderfully.
Stichon: You loved righteousness and hated iniquity: therefore God, your God, anointed you with the oil of joy above your companions.

Gospel: Matthew 8:28-9:1
Fifth Sunday After Pentecost .
The Holy Gospel According To St. Matthew The Evangelist.
At that time as Jesus reached the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two men who were possessed, coming from the tombs, so exceedingly fierce that no one could pass by that way. And behold, they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with you, Jesus Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” Now at a distance from them there was a herd of many swine, feeding. And the devils kept begging him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us into the herd of swine.” And he said to them, “Go!” And they came out and entered into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed from the top of the cliff into the sea, and perished in the water. But the swineherds fled, and going away into the town, they reported everything, and what had befallen the men possessed by - demons. And behold, all the town came out to meet Jesus; and on seeing him they insisted that he leave their district. And getting into a boat, he crossed over and came into his own town.
