2018-01-07-bulletin-for-sunday

Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Bulletin. Sunday, January 7, 2018.
Sunday After the Theophany of our Lord (2nd Day of Celebration of The Theophany) - Holy Synaxis in Honor of the Prophet and Glorious Forerunner John The Baptist.

January 7. Holy Synaxis in honor of the Prophet and Glorious Forerunner John the Baptist.
On this day John the Baptist is honored for the part he played in the event celebrated on the day before. The Synaxis, or gathering, is an occasion for the people of God to come together and hear the voice of the Forerunner preaching penance for the remission of sin.

January 14. Luncheon with Bishop Nicholas. Bishop Nicholas will be with us Sunday, January 14, 2018. Come enjoy a nice luncheon with us in the Church Hall following the 11 a.m. Divine Liturgy. Tickets are $15 and come with Kufta, Chicken, Salad, Rice, and more. Tickets will be on sale Sunday, January 7 and 14; see Mary Sweiss or Sue Helo.

Thank you to all those who attended and made this years’ New Year’s Eve Party at Holy Cross Church hall an amazing occasion. We are working tirelessly to make Holy Cross Church a better place and it’s all thanks to your support. God bless all of you, and may 2018 be a blessed year.

Thank you to the families who donated the TVs for the classrooms. We have been very blessed this year with many donors who have helped in so many ways, such as donations for the festival, Wine and Dine Fundraiser, 2018 calendar, and materials and labor for the minor renovations (backlot cleanup, lighting, paint, painting materials, room fans, brick work, roof maintenance, A/C maintenance, refrigerator maintenance, flowers around church, fencing, counter tops, tile flooring, and so much more). Thank you very much for your generosity and dedication to the future growth of Holy Cross Church.

The Bishop’s Appeal. Our goal this year is $19,000; so far 25 members of our parish have donated to the 2017 Bishop’s Appeal, there is still time to donate as the appeal deadline is moved to January 31, 2018. In today’s Gospel, St. John the Forerunner testifies that he has seen the Christ, the Lamb of God who has come to take away the sins of the world! How much our troubled and sinful world today needs Christ’s healing and salvation! It is through the Church that the Lord’s saving power continues to flow out to all who have faith. In this new year of grace, your generous gift to the Bishop’s Appeal, will enable our Melkite Church to touch the lives of so many, bringing the message of salvation, faith, and new life to our culture that struggles in the bondage of darkness and sin.
If you have not already sent your gift, please do so today so that 100% of our parish will respond to Sayidna’s call. If you have already given, please consider sending an additional donation. Bishop’s Appeal donation slips are available in the narthex. Thank you for your generosity!
Remember The Melkite Church In Your Will: Give a lasting gift for future generations of Melkites and help to ensure that our beautiful Melkite heritage continues to grow and flourish for your children’s children. Simply add the following statement to your last will and testament: I hereby bequeath to the Melkite Eparchy of Newton the following sum: $_______. Contact Bishop Nicholas personally to inform him of your generous bequest: 3 VFW Parkway, West Roxbury, MA 02132.

Vocation Awareness. In today’s epistle, Saint Paul reminds us that Christ came into the world as a Light so that we might be reborn and made whole. In Baptism, we receive the Holy Spirit and become truly beloved children of God. We still need priests to remind us of our great dignity and to serve the Holy Mysteries that bring about that awesome change in us. Pray for an increase of priests in our Eparchy and encourage possible candidates to respond to God’s call.

Vocation View. Saint Paul urges Christian readers to live a life of communion, in mutual love, and in the love that God has given us. Jesus teaches us the importance and implications of that life of loving communion. Who shall preach and teach it to us today? Pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and monastic life and encourage possible candidates.

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Hymns: (See our Church’s website for Audio Recordings: holycrossmelkite.org/Melkite-hymns)
Troparion of the Resurrection (Tone 6). The angelic powers appeared at your tomb, and the guards became as dead men, and Mary stood by the Sepulcher seeking your spotless Body. You despoiled Hades and yet were not tempted by it, You met the Virgin O Bestower of Life. O Lord who rose from the dead glory to you.
Troparion of the Theophany (Tone 1). At your Baptism in the Jordan, O Lord, the worship of the Trinity was revealed: for the Father’s voice bore witness to you by calling You his Beloved Son, and the spirit in the form of a dove confirmed the truth of these words. O Christ God who have appeared to us, and enlightened the world, glory to You.
Troparion of St. John, the Forerunner (Tone 4). The memory of the just is mentioned with praise. As for you, O forerunner, the Lord’s witness is enough: indeed, you were greater that the prophets since you were found worthy to baptize in the waters the One they could but announce. You have fought for the sake of truth and proclaimed to those in Hades that God who appeared in the flesh has taken away the sins of the world and bestowed his great mercy upon us.
Troparion of the Holy Cross (Tone 2). O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. Strengthen our Public Authorities in every good deed and protect your nation with your Cross.
Kondakion of the Theophany (Tone 4). Today You have appeared, O Lord, to the universe and Your light, O Christ our God, has been impressed upon us who sing to You with full knowledge: You came and appeared, O Inaccessible Light.

Readings for Sunday, January 7, 2018.
Epistle: Acts 19: 1-8.
Prokimenon (Tone 7)
The just shall rejoice in the Lord and place his hope in him.
All those with an upright heart shall be praised.
Stichon: O God hear my voice when I pray to you; save my life from the dreadful enemy.

Reading from the Epistle of the feast of St. John. Acts of the Apostles.
In those days it came to pass, while Apollos was in Corinth, that Paul crossed the upper districts and went to Ephesus. He found some of the disciples and asked them, “Have you received the Holy Spirit since you became believers?” But they answered him, “We have not ever heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said to them, “How then were you baptized?” They replied, “With John’s baptism.” Then Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus Christ.” Hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, and when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they began to speak in tongues and to speak for God. They were about twelve men in all. Then for three months he went into the synagogue, speaking confidently, arguing with them and convincing them about God’s kingdom.

ALLELUIA (Tone 4)
The just shall bloom like the palm tree; he shall grow like a cedar of Lebanon.
Stichon: Those who are planted in the Lord’s house shall flourish in the courts of our God.

Gospel: Mark 1:1-8
The Holy Gospel According To St. John The Baptist.
At that time John saw Jesus coming to him, and he said, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one of whom I said, ‘After me there comes one who has been set above me, because he was before me.’ And I did not know him. But that he may be known to Israel, for this reason have I come baptizing with water.” And John bore witness, saying. “I beheld the Spirit descending as a dove from heaven, and it hovered over him. And I did not know him. But the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The man upon whom you will see the Spirit descending and hovering, he it is who baptizes with the Holy Spirit”.’ And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”
