2018-01-14-bulletin-for-sunday

Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Bulletin. Sunday, January 14, 2018.
15th Sunday After the Holy Cross (Zaccheus). Leave-taking of the Feast of the Theophany.

January 14. Leave-taking of the Feast of the Theophany. Commemoration of our Holy fathers who were martyred in Sinai and Raitho.
A group of holy monks who lived on a summit of Mount Sinai called Rathio were killed by Bedouin tribesmen in the year 400, in the days of Emperor Arcadius. This led Emperor Justinian to build a large fortified monastery on Mount Sinai in 527, that of St. Catherine which is still in existence.

January 14. Luncheon with Bishop Nicholas. Bishop Nicholas will be with us Sunday, January 14, 2018. Come enjoy a nice luncheon with us in the Church Hall following the 11 a.m. Divine Liturgy. Tickets are $15 and come with Kufta, Chicken, Salad, Rice, and more. Tickets will be on sale till Sunday, January 14; see Mary Sweiss or Sue Helo.

Thank you to all those who attended and made this years’ New Year’s Eve Party at Holy Cross Church hall an amazing occasion. We are working tirelessly to make Holy Cross Church a better place and it’s all thanks to your support. God bless all of you, and may 2018 be a blessed year.

Thank you to the families who donated the TVs for the classrooms. We have been very blessed this year with many donors who have helped in so many ways, such as donations for the festival, Wine and Dine Fundraiser, 2018 calendar, and materials and labor for the minor renovations (backlot cleanup, lighting, paint, painting materials, room fans, brick work, roof maintenance, A/C maintenance, refrigerator maintenance, flowers around church, fencing, counter tops, tile flooring, and so much more). Thank you very much for your generosity and dedication to the future growth of Holy Cross Church.

The Bishop’s Appeal. Our goal this year is $19,000; so far 25 members of our parish have donated to the 2017 Bishop’s Appeal, there is still time to donate as the appeal deadline is moved to January 31, 2018. The annual Bishop’s Appeal is vital for funding the many needs of our Melkite Church throughout the US: the education of our children in the Faith; the support of our new outreaches and missions; the training of our seminarians; the publishing of SOPHIA magazine, and the care of our elderly clergy are all supported by your donations to the Bishop’s Appeal. In addition, a tithe, or ten percent, of the Appeal funds go to our brothers and sisters in need. Sayidna is counting on your support. If you have not already sent in your gift, please do so today. We need 100% support from our parish! If you have already given, please consider sending an additional donation. Appeal donation slips are available in the narthex. Thank you for your generosity!
Remember The Melkite Church In Your Will: Give a lasting gift for future generations of Melkites and help to ensure that our beautiful Melkite heritage continues to grow and flourish for your children’s children. Simply add the following statement to your last will and testament: I hereby bequeath to the Melkite Eparchy of Newton the following sum: $_______. Contact Bishop Nicholas personally to inform him of your generous bequest: 3 VFW Parkway, West Roxbury, MA 02132.

We uploaded many Melkite hymns for the Divine Liturgy and other important services. To practice or become more familiar with our beautiful liturgical hymns you can listen or download them by visiting the above link.

Vocation Awareness. In today’s epistle, Saint Paul reminds us that Christ came into the world as a Light so that we might be reborn and made whole. In Baptism, we receive the Holy Spirit and become truly beloved children of God. We still need priests to remind us of our great dignity and to serve the Holy Mysteries that bring about that awesome change in us. Pray for an increase of priests in our Eparchy and encourage possible candidates to respond to God’s call.

Vocation View. Saint Paul urges Christian readers to live a life of communion, in mutual love, and in the love that God has given us. Jesus teaches us the importance and implications of that life of loving communion. Who shall preach and teach it to us today? Pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and monastic life and encourage possible candidates.

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

At your Baptism in the Jordan, O Lord, the worship of the Trinity was revealed: for the Father’s voice bore witness to you by calling You his Beloved Son, and the spirit in the form of a dove confirmed the truth of these words. O Christ God who have appeared to us, and enlightened the world, glory to You.
Troparion of the Holy Cross (Tone 2). O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. Strengthen our Public Authorities in every good deed and protect your nation with your Cross.
Kondakion of the Theophany (Tone 4). Today You have appeared, O Lord, to the universe and Your light, O Christ our God, has been impressed upon us who sing to You with full knowledge: You came and appeared, O Inaccessible Light.

Readings for Sunday, January 14, 2018.
Epistle: Ephesians 4:7-13.
Prokimenon (Tone 1)
May your kindness, O Lord, be upon us, for we have hoped in you.
Stichon: Exult, you just, in the Lord; praise from the upright is fitting.

Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians.
Brethren, to each one of us the grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s bestowal. Thus is says, Ascending on high, he led away captives; he gave gifts to men (Ps.61:19). Now this ascending, what does it mean but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended, he it is who ascended also above all the heavens, that he might fill all things. And he himself gave some men as apostles, and some as prophets, and others as pastors and teachers, in order to perfect the saints for a work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the deep knowledge of the Son of God, to perfect manhood, to the mature measure of the fullness of Christ.

ALLELUIA (Tone 5)
Your favor, O Lord, I will sing forever; from generation to generation, my mouth will proclaim your faithfulness.
Stichon: For you have said, “My kindness is established forever.”
In heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness.

Gospel: Matthew 4:12-17
The Holy Gospel According To St. Matthew.
At that time, when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled: "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, by the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death a light has arisen." From that time, Jesus began to preach and say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
