Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Bulletin. Sunday, April 8, 2018.
Sunday of the Belief of Saint Thomas. Eighth Day of the Celebration of Pascha.
On this day, the Church celebrates the confirmation of the resurrection of Christ, on the occasion of the doubt of Thomas changing into a profession of faith. His audacity is stressed together with the infinite kindness of Christ who gave him the most striking proofs.
The spiritual closeness of John is commemorated together with the physical closeness of Thomas.

April 8. Commemoration of the Holy Herodion, Agabus, Rufus, Asyncritus, Phlegon and Hermes, who where among the Seventy. Saint Paul salutes these apostles in his Epistle to the Romans (16: 11-14) with the exception of Agabus of Jerusalem who foretold Paul’s imprisonment and the famine that occurred under Emperor Claudius between the year 45 and 48.

Jesus said “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die’ ” (John 11:26).

We uploaded many Melkite hymns for the Divine Liturgy and other important services. To practice or become more familiar with our beautiful liturgical hymns you can listen or download them by visiting the above link.

Vocation Awareness. In today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles we see that God wanted the Word to be spread and proclaimed. The Church grew, the Good News was proclaimed, and many people were healed by the apostles. The growth of the Church could not be stopped by any human power because the Spirit of God filled the lives of the believers. In the Gospel, we see Jesus giving His ministers power to reestablish communion with God and among people, by sending them forth with His power. They needed to first touch Him personally, to have a profound experience of Him so they could convincingly share it with others. Pray for our priests, and for an increase in their ranks.

Vocation View. Saint Paul urges Christian readers to live a life of communion, in mutual love, and in the love that God has given us. Jesus teaches us the importance and implications of that life of loving communion. Who shall preach and teach it to us today? Pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and monastic life and encourage possible candidates.

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Troparion of St. Thomas (Tone 7). (Three times). While the tomb was sealed You shone forth from it, O Christ our Life, and while the doors remained closed, You stood among your Disciples, O Resurrection of all, and through them You restored a new spirit in us according to your great Mercy.
Kondakion (Tone 8). O Christ God, Thomas explored your vivifying side with an eager hand; and since You had entered the room while the doors were clsed, He cried out with the other apostles: “You are my Lord and my God!”
Troparion of the Holy Cross (Tone 2). O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. Strengthen our Public Authorities in every good deed and protect your nation with your Cross.
Kondakion of the Mother of God (Tone 2). O never failing Protectress of Christians and their ever present intercessor before the Creator, despise not the petitions of us sinners, but in your goodness extend your help to us who call upon you with confidence. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. [21] Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you’ ” (John 20:19-21).

Readings for Sunday, April 8, 2018.
Epistle: Acts of the Apostles: 5:12-20.
Prokimenon (Tone 3)
Great is our Lord, and great is his power, and to his wisdom there is no limit.
Stichon: Praise the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever.

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles:
In those days by the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among
the people (and with one accord, they all would meet in Solomon’s portico; but of the rest, no one dared to associate with them, yet the people made much of them. And the multitude of men and women who believed in the Lord continued to increase), so that they carried the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and pallets, in order that, as Peter went by, at least his shadow would fall upon some of them. And crowds also came to Jerusalem from neighboring towns, and they brought the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits — and all of them were healed.
But the High Priest rose up, and all his supporters (that is, the members of the Sadducean sect), and being filled with hatred, they laid their hands upon the apostles and threw them into the public jail. But during the night, an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison, and led them out, saying: “Go, and standing in the temple, speak to the people all the words of this life.”

ALLELUIA (Tone 8)
Come, let us rejoice in the Lord, let us sing gladly to God our Savior!
Stichon: For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

Gospel of Pascha: John 20: 19-31 (Skeptic Thomas)
The Holy Gospel According To St. John.
When it was late, that same day, the first of the week, though the doors where the disciples gathered had been closed for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst and said to them, “Peace be to you!” And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore rejoiced at the sight of the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be to you! As the Father has sent me, I also send you.” When he had said this, he breathed upon them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit; whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.” Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into his side I will not believe.” And after eight days, his disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being closed, and stood in their midst, and said, “Peace be to you!” Then he said to Thomas. “Bring here your finger, and see my hands; and bring here your hand, and put it into my side; and be not unbelieving, but believing.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen me, Thomas, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed.” Many other signs also Jesus worked in the sight of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.
