2018-07-01-bulletin-for-sunday

Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Bulletin. Sunday, July 1, 2018.
Healing of the Paralytic. 6th Sunday After Pentecost.

July 1. Commemoration of the Holy Wonderworkers Cosmas and Damian.
Under the influence of the Byzantine power over Italy, from Justinian to Constantine Copronymus (554-572), a great devotion to Cosmas and Damian spread throughout the country. In Rome alone, there were nine churches built in their honor, and three are still standing. Perhaps there was another pair of saints of the same name, besides the two who were martyred in Cilicia under Emperor Duocletian. This would explain the two feasts of Cosmas and Damian in the Byzantine Rite—on November 1 and July 1.
There are three sets of brothers with identical names who offered their medical skills to all in the name of Jesus without recompense. The first set were martyred in the third century in Arabia and are commemorated on Nov. 1. A third set is honored with a feast day on Oct. 17. The second set is honored on July 1. They were martyred in Rome in the third century. There were once nine churches built in their honor in Rome, of which three still survive.

Jesus said “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die’ ” (John 11:26).
The Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Community offer our condolences to the family of the servant of God, Michelle Morice who was born reposed in the Lord on June 15, 2018 in France. We extend our condolences to the entire family and in particular his wife Rana Mashni Morice, and his children David, Daniel & Damien. May his memory be eternal.

Thank you to all those who donated to the Peter’s Pence second collection which raised $665.

Listen to Melkite audio links on our parish website at holycrossmelkite.org/Melkite-hymns
We uploaded many Melkite hymns for the Divine Liturgy and other important services. To practice or become more familiar with our beautiful liturgical hymns you can listen or download them by visiting the above link.

Vocational Awareness. Saint Paul explained to his readers that his ministry – like that of all the apostles – involved becoming a father to them. He was willing to do that for love of them that they might reach Christ. In the Gospel, friends brought a paralyzed man to Christ so that he could be made whole. We call our priests “fathers”, because they serve us in this very necessary way. Pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and monastic life in our Church.

Vocation View. Saint Paul urges Christian readers to live a life of communion, in mutual love, and in the love that God has given us. Jesus teaches us the importance and implications of that life of loving communion. Who shall preach and teach it to us today? Pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and monastic life and encourage possible candidates.

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Readings for Sunday, July 1, 2018.
Epistle: Romans 12:6-14.
Prokimenon (Tone 5)
You, O Lord, will keep us and preserve us always from this generation.
Stichon: Save me, O Lord, for there is no longer any holy man, for truthfulness has vanished from among the children of men.

A Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans:
BRETHREN, we have gifts differing according to the grace that has been given us, such as prophecy to be used according to the degree of faith, or ministry in ministering, or instruction in teaching, or exhortation in encouraging, or almsgiving in being generous with simplicity, or leadership in leading with discretion, or works of mercy in performing them joyfully.
Let love be without pretense. Hate what is evil. Hold to what is good. Love one another with fraternal charity, being the first to honor the other. Be not slothful in zeal; be fervent in spirit, serving the Lord, rejoicing in hope. Be patient in tribulations, persevering in prayer. Relieve the saints’ needs, practicing hospitality. Bless those who persecute you: bless, and do not curse!

ALLELUIA (Tone 5)
Your favor, O Lord, I will sing forever;
from generation to generation, my mouth will proclaim your faithfulness.
Stichon: For you have said, “My kindness is established forever.” In heaven
you have confirmed your faithfulness.

Gospel of the Feast: Matthew 9:1-8.
The Holy Gospel According To St. Matthew the Evangelist. (Healing of a Paralytic at Capernaum).
At that time, getting into a boat, Jesus crossed over and came to his own town. And behold, they brought to him a paralytic lying on a pallet. And Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven you.” And behold, some of the Scribes said within themselves, “This man blasphemes.” And Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you harbor evil thoughts in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins” then he said to the paralytic “Arise, take up your pallet and go to your house.” And he arose, and went away to his house. But when the crowds saw it, they were struck with fear, and glorified God who had given such power to men.
