Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Bulletin. Sunday, July 22, 2018.
9th Sunday After Pentecost. Jesus Walks on Water.

July 22. Commemoration of the Ointment-bearing Woman, Mary Magdalen, the Equal of the Apostles. Mary, born in the village of Magdala on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, is a great model of love and repentance. She followed Jesus to the foot of the cross, bought spices to anoint His body and was the first to witness and announce his resurrection.

Patriarch Joseph (Youssef) Absi’s visit to Orange County and Los Angeles on Friday, July 20-Sunday, July 22, 2018. With great joy and pride we announce that His Beatitude Youssef, Patriarch of Antioch and all the East, will be visiting our Eparchy of Newton for the Melkites in the United States of America.

Saturday, July 21, 2018. 12:30-6:00 p.m. Lunch/Q&A with His Beatitude Patriarch Youssef for Youth and Young Adults at Saint Anne’s Melkite Catholic Cathedral (North Hollywood).
Sunday, July 22, 2018. 11:00 a.m. Pontifical Divine Liturgy. Saint Anne Melkite Catholic Cathedral (North Hollywood).
Sunday, July 22, 2018. 2:30 p.m. Luncheon in honor of Patriarch Joseph Absi’s visit. Please join us for this historical occasion to welcome our Patriarch. Jesus said “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die’ ” (John 11:26). The Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Community offer our condolences to the family of the servant of God, Marino Sayes who reposed in the Lord on July 17, 2018 in Sudan. We extend our condolences to the entire family and in particular his wife Rosie, his children Joe and Bernie, his parents Ysset and Joseph, his siblings Michael, Mary, and Magdy, and the whole Kilzi family. The Sunday, June 22 Divine Liturgy will be in his memory. May his memory be eternal.

This year’s Vacation Bible Camp was a great success. Our theme during our Monday, July 16 – Friday, July 20 2017 program theme was “Shipwrecked-Rescued by Jesus.” The children experienced God’s Word in surprising and unforgettable ways. Each day, leaders reinforced one simple Bible truth and encouraged the children to remember and apply the message to real life situations.
This year we had over 25 participants and over 40 volunteers. A special thank you to all our amazing volunteers who helped share God’s word with our children. The program took hundreds of hours to prepare and it could not have been done without your encouragement and support. We are blessed to have such a caring community. May God continue to grant our Church great spiritual growth in the years to come.
Next year’s Vacation Bible Camp theme is “Roar! Life is Wild, God is Good!” and will be filled with great programs, skits, songs, spiritual growth, and a whole lot of fun. We hope to see everyone back next year for another remarkable program.
All the children and volunteers will attend this Sunday, July 22, 11:00 a.m. Divine Liturgy and sing the songs they learned following the Divine Liturgy. We will also have a video and picture presentation of the week’s activities. Please bring your whole family.

Vocation Awareness. Saint Paul sees his ministry as building up the “temple of God,” solidly rooting his people in Christ, and acknowledges that others have done this ministry before and after him, all working together. In the Gospel, Jesus says that we, like Saint Peter, can walk over the storms and deep waves of life if we keep our eyes on Him and if we remain rooted in Him. We need priests and male and female monastics to help us keep our rootedness in Christ and to keep our eyes fixed upon Him in our daily life. Have you ever considered a vocation to the priesthood or the monastic life? Can you encourage others to it? Will you pray for more vocations?

Vocation View. Saint Paul urges Christian readers to live a life of communion, in mutual love, and in the love that God has given us. Jesus teaches us the importance and implications of that life of loving communion. Who shall preach and teach it to us today? Pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and monastic life and encourage possible candidates.

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Readings for Sunday, July 22, 2018.
Epistle: 1 Corinthians 3:9-17.
Prokimenon (Tone 8)
Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them;
let all round about him bring gifts to the awesome Lord!
Stichon: God is renowned in Judah;
in Israel, great is his name.

A Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians:
BRETHREN, we arc God’s co-workers, you are God’s field, God’s building. According to God’s grace which has been given to me, as a wise builder, I laid the foundation, and another builds upon it. But let everyone he builds upon it. For other foundation no one that which has been laid, which is Jesus the Christ. But if anyone builds upon this foundation with gold, silver, gems, wood, hay, straw — the work of each one shall be made manifest: for the Lord’s day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed in fire; and the work of each man, whoever he be, shall be assayed in fire. If the work any man built on the foundation stands, he shall receive a reward; if someone’s work burns down, he shall suffer its loss, yet he himself shall be saved, though only by passing, so to speak, through fire. Do you not know that you are God’s temple, and that God’s Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys this temple of God, God will destroy him: for holy is God’s temple, and this [holy temple] you are.

ALLELUIA (Tone 8)
Come, let us rejoice in the Lord;
let us sing joyfully to God our Savior!
Stichon: Let us greet his presence with thanksgiving; let us joyfully sing psalms to him.

Gospel of the Feast: Matthew 14:22-34.
The Holy Gospel According To St. Matthew the Evangelist.
At that time Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and cross the sea ahead of him, while he dismissed the crowd. And when he had dismissed the crowd, he went up the mountain alone to pray. And when it was late, he was there alone, but the boat was in the midst of the sea, buffeted by the waves, for the wind was against them. But in the fourth watch of the night Jesus came to them, walking upon the sea. And the disciples, seeing him walk upon the sea, were greatly alarmed, and exclaimed, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. Then Jesus immediately spoke to them, saying, “Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid.” But Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you over the water.” And he said, “Come.” Then Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water to come to Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind, he was afraid; and as he began to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And Jesus at once stretched out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “0 you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind fell. But those who were in the boat came and worshipped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” And crossing over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.
