2018-10-28-bulletin-for-sunday

Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Bulletin. Sunday, October 28, 2018.
Seventh Sunday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Gospel of the Daughter of Jairus.

October 28. Commemoration of Holy Martyrs Terence, Neonila, and of our Venerable Father Stephen the Sabaite, composer of Canons. Terence and Neonila were martyred in Syria at an uncertain date. Tradition recounts that Stephen was a nephew of Saint John the Damascene. He lived and died at the Monastery of St. Sabas. He composed a number of Canons and left us an account of the martyrdom of twenty monks of the monastery massacred in the year 797.

Vocation Awareness. Christ was aware of the Father’s power working through Him – people needed Him near to have that wonderful blessing. Paul reminds us of God’s grace, power and mercy poured out on us and available to us as He works to build us up as His Church, His body. Priests help us focus and be open to that saving power of God in our midst. Unfortunately, at present we are in desperate need of men to accept the challenge of that ministry. Please pray that God call, and that many respond.

Vocation View. Saint Paul urges Christian readers to live a life of communion, in mutual love, and in the love that God has given us. Jesus teaches us the importance and implications of that life of loving communion. Who shall preach and teach it to us today? Pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and monastic life and encourage possible candidates.

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Troparion of the Resurrection (Tone 6). The angelic powers appeared at your tomb, and the guards became as dead men, and Mary stood by the Sepulcher seeking your spotless Body. You despoiled Hades and yet were not tempted by it, You met the Virgin O Bestower of Life. O Lord who rose from the dead glory to you.
Troparion of the Holy Cross (Tone 2). O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. Strengthen our Public Authorities in every good deed and protect your nation with your Cross.
Kondakion of the Mother of God (Tone 4). O never failing Protectress of Christians and their ever present intercessor before the Creator, despise not the petitions of us sinners, but in your goodness extend your help to us who call upon you with confidence. Hasten, O Mother of God, to intercede for us, for you have always protected those who honor you.

Readings for Sunday, October 28, 2018.
Epistle Ephesians 2:4-10.
Prokimenon (Tone 6)
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance!
Stichon: To you, O Lord, I have called: O my Rock, be not deaf to me!

A Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians: 2:4-10.
Brethren, God, who is rich in mercy, by reason of his very great love with which he has loved us even when we were dead by reason of our sins, brought us to life together with Christ, and you have been saved by grace. [God] raised us up together, and enthroned us together in heaven in Christ Jesus, so that he might show in future ages the overflowing riches of his grace, through his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith: and that, not on your own, for it is God’s gift, and not the result of work which might have been a pretext for anyone to boast. For we are his workmanship, we who were created in Christ Jesus through good works which God has pre-planned so that we could walk in them.

ALLELUIA (Tone 6)

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High abides in the shadow of the God of heaven.
Stichon: He will say to the Lord, “My wall, my refuge, my God in whom I will trust!”

Luke 8:41-56.
The Holy Gospel According To St. Luke the Evangelist.
At that time behold, there came a man named Jairus to Jesus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at the feet of Jesus, he entreated Him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter about twelve years of age, and she was dying. And it happened as He went that He was pressed upon by the crowds. And a certain woman who for twelve years had had a hemorrhage, and had spent all her means on physicians, but could not be cured by anyone, came up behind Him and touched the tassel of His cloak; and at once her hemorrhage ceased. And Jesus said, “Who touched Me? But as all were denying it, Peter, and those who were with Him, said, “Master, the crowds throng and press upon You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?” But Jesus said, “Someone touched Me; for I perceived that power had gone forth from Me.” But the woman, seeing that she had not escaped notice, came up trembling, and falling down at His feet, declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched Him, and how she had been healed instantly. And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved thee; go in peace.” While he was yet speaking, there came one from the house of the ruler of the synagogue, saying to him, “your daughter is dead; do not trouble Him.” But Jesus on hearing this word answered the father of the girl, “Do not be afraid; only have faith and she shall be saved.” And when He came to the house, He allowed no one to enter with Him, except Peter and James and John, and the girl’s father and mother. And all were weeping and mourning for her. But he said, “Do not weep; she is asleep, not dead.” And they laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead. But He, taking her by the hand, cried out, saying, “Girl, arise! “And her spirit returned, and she rose up immediately. And He directed that something be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed, but He charged them to tell no one what had happened.
