2018-11-11-bulletin-for-sunday

Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Bulletin. Sunday, November 11, 2018.
Eighth Sunday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Gospel of the Merciful Samaritan.

November 11. Commemoration of the Holy Martyrs Menas, Victor, Vincent and Stephanida and of our Holy Father Theodore the Studite, Confessor.
The feast of Menas is celebrated on December 10.
Victor and Stephanida were martyred in Egypt under Emperor Antoninus (138-161).
Vincent, a Spanish Archdeacon, was martyred toward the beginning of the fourth century, under Emperor Maximianus.
Theodore the Studite was born in Constantinople in the year 759. After completing his literary education, at the age of twenty-two, he entered the monastery of Sakkhoudion in Bithynia, where he remained under the direction of his uncle Plato. He was ordained by Patriarch Tarasius and, in 794, became Abbot of Sakkhoudion. In 797, he was exiled to Thessalonica for having protested against the adultery of Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenete. Empress Irene recalled him from exile. Because of the many incursions of the Arabs (798-799), he abandoned Sakkhoudion and took refuge in the Capital, at the monastery of Studion. This monastery was called Studion by the name of its founder, Centurion Studius, who established it in 463. Exiled for the second time in 809 by Emperor Nicephorus Logothete, he was called back to his monastery in 811 by Michael Rangabe. He was exiled again, for the third time, for his defense of the holy Icons against Emperor Leo the Armenian (815-821). He died in 826 after having suffered much and struggled for the faith, leaving to his followers in the monastic life a Constitution, numerous hymnographic compositions and spiritual writings. His holy remains were transferred to the Monastery of Studion in 844.

2018 Bishop’s Appeal. The annual Bishop’s Appeal is an important way by which our parish fulfills its duty to our Melkite family throughout the U.S. and to our needy brothers and sisters. Vocation Awareness. Saint Paul urges Christian readers to live a life of communion, in mutual love, and in the love that God has given us. Jesus teaches us the importance and implications of that life of loving communion. Who shall preach and teach it to us today? Pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and monastic life and encourage possible candidates.

Vocation View.

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Readings for Sunday, November 11, 2018.
Epistle Ephesians 4:1-7.
Prokimenon (Tone 8)
Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them; let all round about him bring gifts to the awesome Lord.
Stichon: God is renowned in Judah; in Israel, great is his name.

A Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians: 2:14-22.
Brethren, I the prisoner in the Lord exhort you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling by which you were called, with all humility and meekness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, careful to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit, even as you were called to a single hope in your calling: one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and throughout all, and in all. But to each one of us, grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s imparting.

ALLELUIA (Tone 8)

Come, let us rejoice in the Lord; Let us sing joyfully to God our Savior!
Stichon: Let us greet his presence with thanksgiving; let us joyfully sing psalms to him!

Luke 10: 25-37 (The Merciful Samaritan)
The Holy Gospel According To St. Luke the Evangelist.
At that time, behold, a certain lawyer got up to test Jesus, saying, “Master, what must I do to gain eternal life?” But he said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read?” He answered and said, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole strength, and with thy whole mind; and thy neighbor as thyself.” And he said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you shall live.” But he, wishing to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus answered, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell in with robbers, who after both stripping him and beating him went their way, leaving him half-dead. But, as it happened, a certain priest was going down the same way, and when he saw him, he passed by. And likewise a Levite also, when he was near the place and saw him, passed by. But a certain Samaritan as he journeyed came upon him, and seeing him, was moved with compassion. And he went up to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. And setting him on his own beast, he brought him to an inn and took care of him. And as he was leaving the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I, on my way back, will repay you.’ Which of these three, in your opinion, proved himself neighbor to the man who fell among the robber?” And he said, “The one who took pity on him!” And Jesus said to him, “Go and do as he did.”
