Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Bulletin.
January 6, 2019. Feast Of The Theophany of Our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ.

January 6. Feast Of The Theophany of Our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ.
The Byzantine Church attaches great importance to this feast because of its deep theological significance. What is celebrated is not so much the historical fact of the manifestation of the Holy Trinity to the world for the very first time, nor the beginning of Christ's public life, nor again the baptism administered by John. It is rather the manifestation of God's glory, of His love for mankind, of His mercy, and compassion expressed in the Person of Jesus Christ, who assumed flesh and became Man in order to become a sacrifice of salvation for the sake of all men. “For the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men” (Titus 2:11).
Inspired by the baptism of Christ and by the stirring of divine life poured forth for the salvation and sanctification of mankind, the early Church reserved this day for the baptism of catechumens, unceasingly repeating with St. Paul: “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Galatians 3:27).

Theophany of Christ Liturgical Schedule:
-Saturday, January 5. 5:00 p.m. Divine Liturgy in Arabic followed by blessing of Theophany water.
-Sunday, January 6. 11:00 a.m. Divine Liturgy in English followed by blessing of Theophany water.

Thomas Aquinas College Summer High School Program Scholarship. Sunday, July 15 to Saturday, July 27, 2019 at the Santa Paula campus, 70 miles north of Los Angeles. A full scholarship is available to any Holy Cross parishioner going into their senior High School year. This $975 scholarship covers tuition, housing, meals, books, and organized off campus activities.
The pursuit of wisdom begins with wonder — wonder about the causes and principles of man and nature, and wonder about God, who is the first cause and principle of all things. For two weeks, students from around the country and abroad will delight in spirited conversation, engaging firsthand some of the best works of the past 2,500 years. They will read and discuss texts selected from the masters of the Western intellectual tradition. The program will be centered around the College’s unique Great Books program of Catholic education. The High School Summer Program is a time for forging new friendships, for enjoying the give and take of rational argument, and for pursuing the truth, which civilizes, ennobles, and liberates.
Classes are conducted, like all classes at Thomas Aquinas College, using the Discussion Method, guided by members of the teaching faculty. Class size is limited to 17 students in order to allow each student the opportunity to contribute to the discussions. The location is ideal for recreation of all sorts. In addition to daily sports, occasional movies, and hiking, the program includes excursions to local attractions. Students will visit the Getty Museum, take in a concert at the Hollywood Bowl, and head to Santa Barbara for volleyball on the beach and an exploration of the historic city.
Thomas Aquinas College is genuinely Catholic and has a rich sacramental life. During the Summer Program, Mass will be offered daily and a chaplain will be available on campus at all times. For further information contact Holy Cross Church and review these links:

Vocation View. Saint Paul urges Christian readers to live a life of communion, in mutual love, and in the love that God has given us. Jesus teaches us the importance and implications of that life of loving communion. Who shall preach and teach it to us today? Pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and monastic life and encourage possible candidates.

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Sunday:
Troparion of the Feast (Tone 1). At your Baptism in the Jordan, O Lord, the worship of the Trinity was revealed: for the Father’s voice bore witness to you by calling You his Beloved Son, and the spirit in the form of a dove confirmed the truth of these words. O Christ God who have appeared to us, and enlightened the world, glory to You.
Hypacoi of the Feast (Tone 2). When You enlightened all things at the time of your manifestation, the sea of unbelief ebbed away and the Jordan River reversed its course, flowing uphill and carrying us to heaven. Through the prayers of your Mother, O Christ God, keep us in the loftiness of your divine commands and save us.
Troparion of the Holy Cross (Tone 2). O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. Strengthen our Public Authorities in every good deed and protect your nation with your Cross.
Kondakion of the Feast (Tone 4). Today You have appeared, O Lord, to the universe and Your light, O Christ our God, has been impressed upon us who sing to You with full knowledge: You came and appeared, O Inaccessible Light.

Readings for Sunday, January 6, 2018.
Prokimenon (Tone 4).
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
God is the Lord and he has appeared to us.
Stichon: Sing to the lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever.

A Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to Titus (Titus 2:11-14 & 3:4-7).
My son Titus, the grace of God our Savior has appeared to all men, instructing us, in order that, rejecting ungodliness and worldly lust, we may live temperately and justly and piously in this world; looking for the blessed hope and glorious coming of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and cleanse for himself an acceptable people, pursuing good works. But when the goodness and kindness of God our Savior appeared, then not by reason of good works that we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us through the path of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he has abundantly poured upon us though Jesus Christ our Savior, in order that, justified by his grace, we may be heirs in the hope of life everlasting.

ALLELUIA (Tone 1)
Give to the Lord, you sons of God, give to the Lord Glory and praise.
Stichon: The Lord’s voice is over the waters; the God of glory has thundered, the Lord, over the vast waters.

The Holy Gospel According To St. Matthew the Evangelist (Matthew 3:13-17).
At that time Jesus came from Galilee to John, at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. But John was reluctant, and said, “It is I who ought to be baptized by you, and you come to me?” But Jesus answered and said to him, “Let it be so now, for this is how what is right must be fulfilled.” Then he let him do it. And when Jesus had been baptized, he immediately came up from the water. And behold, the heavens were opened to him. And he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and coming upon him. And behold, a voice from the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
