2019-06-30-bulletin-for-sunday

Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Bulletin. June 30, 2019.
Third Sunday after Pentecost. The Light of the Body, God and Money, Dependence on God.

June 30. Synaxis in honor of the Holy and Glorious Twelve Apostles, worthy of all praise.
Commemoration of the Holy, Glorious and Illustrious Princes of the Apostles Peter and Paul.
Peter and Paul were martyred in Rome under Emperor Nero in the year 67. Peter was crucified head down, at his own request, and Paul, in his quality of Roman Citizen, was beheaded. The Church unites them in a common celebration and gives them identical honor.
Peter, a brother of Andrew the First-Called, was from Bethsaida. They were the cons of Jonas, of the tribe of Simeon. They lived by the work of their hands. At the time when John the Baptist was in prison, Jesus came to the Lake of Genesareth, and finding Peter and Andrew mending their nets, He called them and they followed Him without hesitation. Peter preached the Gospel in Judea, founded the Church of Antioch and finally came to Rome.
Paul, a Pharisee, belonged to the tribe of Benjamin. He was born in Tarsus of Asia Minor. At first, he persecuted the Church with great zeal and violence, emprisoning and killing the Christians. But Christ appeared to him on the way to Damascus and changed his heart. He was baptized in Damascus by Ananias. He was to become one of the greatest exponents of Christ’s teachings, which he explained in his letters or epistles.

On Sunday, June 30 we will have our annual Peter’s Pence Collection. This annual collection is taken in all Catholic Churches around the world. It gives us an opportunity to be a witness of charity to our brothers and sisters around the world, promotes and supports the works of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, and enables the Catholic Church to respond with emergency financial assistance to victims of war, natural disasters, and others most in need of help. Thank you very much for your generosity.

Jesus said “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die’ ” (John 11:26).
The Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Community offer our condolences to the family of the servant of God, Joseph Hawa who was born on March 19, 1936 in Jaffa, Palestine and reposed in the Lord on June 27, 2019 in Santa Ana, California. Troparion of the Resurrection (Tone 2). When You descended to death, O immortal Life, You put Hades to death by the splendor of Your divinity. And when You raised the dead from below the earth, all the heavenly powers cried out to you: “O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory to You!”
Troparion of the Holy Cross (Tone 2). O Lord save your people and bless your inheritance, granting peace to the world; and protect your community by the power of your Cross.
Kondakion of the Virgin (Tone 2). O never failing Protectress of Christians and their ever present intercessor before the Creator, despise not the petitions of us sinners, but in your goodness extend your help to us who call upon you with confidence. Hasten, O Mother of God, to intercede for us, for you have always protected those who honor you.

Scripture Memory:
“I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. [15] For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. [16] I urge you, then, be imitators of me” (1 Corinthians 4:9-16).

“I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? [26] Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? [27] And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life?” (Matthew 6:25-27).

Vocation Awareness. Jesus Christ and Saint Paul are calling us to check our focus on life: what is really central, what is really important, what is merely peripheral. The answer is clear: we are people loved and saved by God. We live in communion with Him and one another in His Kingdom, already begun among us. Everything else must be put in perspective after and around that fact. Our priests are to constantly call us to “be attentive” to that reality in our lives and world. Pray that God stir up many vocations to the priesthood who will generously respond and serve us in that ministry. Have you prayed for your vocation or that of a friend or family member?

Vocation View. Saint Paul urges Christian readers to live a life of communion, in mutual love, and in the love that God has given us. Jesus teaches us the importance and implications of that life of loving communion. Who shall preach and teach it to us today? Pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and monastic life and encourage possible candidates.

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Catholic Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Readings for Sunday, June 30, 2019.
Prokimenon
May your kindness, O Lord, be upon us, for we have hoped in you.
Stichon: Exult, you just, in the Lord; praise from the upright is fitting.

A Reading from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians (4:9-16).
Brethren, I think God has set forth us the apostles last of all, as men doomed to death, so that we would become a spectacle to the world, and to angels, and to men. We are fools for Christ, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, but we are without honor! To this very hour, we hunger and thirst, and we are naked and buffeted and have no fixed home. And we labor, working with our own hands. We are reviled and we bless, we are persecuted and we bear with it, we are maligned and we console; we have become as the refuse of this world, the scum of all until this present time. I write these things, not to put you to shame, but to admonish you as my dearest children. For although you have ten thousand tutors in Christ, you have not many fathers. Therefore, I beg you, be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.

ALLELUIA
O God, you granted me retribution and made peoples subject to me and saved me from my raging enemies.
Stichon: Therfore I will proclaim you, O Lord, among the nations, and I will sing paraise to your name.

The Holy Gospel According to St. Matthew the Evangelist 6:22-33. (Divine Providence).
At that time as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea (for they were fishermen). And He said to them, “Come, follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” And at once they left the nets and followed Him. And going farther on, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, in a boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. And immediately they left their nets and their father, and followed Him. And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the Good News of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.
