2019-07-14-bulletin-for-sunday

Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Bulletin. July 14, 2019.
Sunday of the Fathers of the First Six Ecumenical Councils.

July 14. Commemoration of the Holy Apostle Aquila. The Christian converts, Aquila and his wife Priscilla, were exiled at the time of Emperor Claudius (around the year 50). In 52, Aquila was the host of St. Paul in Corinth. We see them again together in Ephesus, attracted by their common love of Christ and their common skill, for both were tent-makers.

Sunday, July 14-August 18, 2019. Summer Hymn Camp after the Divine Liturgy. Calling all children going into Grades 1-8. Join us for the “Sunday Hymn Camp” which will take place for six weeks from 12:30 p.m.-1:00 p.m. from July 14-August 18, with a concert on August 25. There is no charge for the summer hymn activities.

The theme is Come Holy Spirit “He will guide you to all truth” John 16:13. Select one of three options for attendance: stay the entire weekend in the serenity of this place, or commute daily from your home, or come just for the day on Saturday. Hymns: (See our Church’s website for Audio Recordings: holycrossmelkite.org/Melkite-hymns)
Troparion of the Resurrection (Tone 4). The women disciples of the Lord, having learned from the angel the joyful announcement of the resurrection, and having rejected the ancestral sentence, proudly told the apostles: Death is despoiled. Christ God is risen, bestowing to the world great mercy.”
Troparion of the Holy Cross (Tone 2). O Lord save your people and bless your inheritance, granting peace to the world; and protect your community by the power of your Cross.
Kondakion of the Virgin (Tone 2). O never failing Protectress of Christians and their ever present intercessor before the Creator, despise not the petitions of us sinners, but in your goodness extend your help to us who call upon you with confidence. Hasten, O Mother of God, to intercede for us, for you have always protected those who honor you.

Vocation Awareness. When Mary visited Elizabeth, she was coming to minister to her. Jesus was within her reaching out to touch Elizabeth and Elizabeth felt the presence of the Lord. Priests are called to minister in this way to the people. Today’s Epistle speaks of Christ touching people so that they can become free children of God. In the Gospel, Jesus frees two men and restores their dignity and identity as children of God. Others wanted to keep the status quo. Priests often have to face this in their ministry. Pray for your priests and pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood.

Vocation View. Saint Paul urges Christian readers to live a life of communion, in mutual love, and in the love that God has given us. Jesus teaches us the importance and implications of that life of loving communion. Who shall preach and teach it to us today? Pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and monastic life and encourage possible candidates.

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Catholic Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Readings for Sunday, July 14, 2019.
Prokimenon (Tone 8)
Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, you just; exult, all you upright of heart.
Stichon: Happy are those whose faults are taken away, and whose sins are covered.

A Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to Titus (3:8-15).
My son Titus, this saying is true, and in this matter I want to insist that those who believe in God be careful to excel in good works; these are good and useful to people. But avoid foolish controversies and geneallgies and quarrels, and disputes about the Law, for they are useless and futile.
Avoid a factious man after warning him one or twice, knowing that such a man is perverted and sins, since he is condemning himself.
When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, make every effort to meet me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Help Zenas the lawyer and Apolos on their way, taking care that they lack nothing. And let our people also learn to excel in good works, in order to help cases of urgent need so that they may not be unfruitful. All my companions greet you. Greet those who love us in the faith. The grace of God be with all of you. Amen.

ALLELUIA (Tone 4)
0 God, our ears have heard, our fathers have declared to us the deeds you did in their days, in the days of old.
Stichon: For you saved us from those who afflicted us and have put to shame those who hated us.

The Holy Gospel According to St. Matthew the Evangelist 5:14-19.
The Lord said to his disciples, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Neither do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but upon the lamp-stand, so as to give light to all in the house. Even so let your light shine before men, in order that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Do not think I have come to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I have not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For amen I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not one letter or one stroke shall be lost from the Law till all things have been accomplished. Therefore whoever does away with one of these least commandments, and so teaches men, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever carries them out and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
