2019-07-21-bulletin-for-sunday

Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Bulletin. July 21, 2019.
Sixth Sunday After Pentecost. The Gospel of the Healing of the Paralytic.

July 21. Commemoration of our Holy Fathers Simeon Salos, the fool for the sake of Christ, and His Companion John. Simeon and John, born in Edessa of Syria, became monks at the Monastery of St. Gerasimos in the desert of Palestine. John remained there, living a life of piety, but Simeon went to Emesa, where he simulated folly. Only after his death was he recognized to have been sound of mind. All of the stories told of him turned to the edification of the faithful. He died in peace toward the end of the sixth century.

Sunday, July 14-August 18, 2019. Summer Hymn Camp after the Divine Liturgy. Calling all children going into Grades 1-8. Join us for the “Sunday Hymn Camp” which will take place for six weeks from 12:30 p.m.-1:00 p.m. from July 14-August 18, with a concert on August 25. There is no charge for the summer hymn activities.

Troparion of the Resurrection (Tone 5). Let us, O faithful, praise and worship the word, coeternal with the Father and the Spirit, born of the Virgin for our Salvation; for He was pleased to be lifted in the flesh upon the cross and to endure death and to raise the dead by His glorious resurrection.
Troparion of the Holy Cross (Tone 2). O Lord save your people and bless your inheritance, granting peace to the world; and protect your community by the power of your Cross.
Kondakion of the Virgin (Tone 2). O never failing Protectress of Christians and their ever present intercessor before the Creator, despise not the petitions of us sinners, but in your goodness extend your help to us who call upon you with confidence. Hasten, O Mother of God, to intercede for us, for you have always protected those who honor you.

Vocation Awareness. Saint Paul explained to his readers that his ministry – like that of all the apostles – involved becoming a father to them. He was willing to do that for love of them that they might reach Christ. In the Gospel, friends brought a paralyzed man to Christ so that he could be made whole. We call our priests “fathers”, because they serve us in this very necessary way. Pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and monastic life in our Church.

Vocation View. Saint Paul urges Christian readers to live a life of communion, in mutual love, and in the love that God has given us. Jesus teaches us the importance and implications of that life of loving communion. Who shall preach and teach it to us today? Pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and monastic life and encourage possible candidates.

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Catholic Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Readings for Sunday, July 21, 2019.
Prokimenon (Tone 5)
You, 0 Lord, will keep us and preserve us always from this generation.
Stichon: Save me, 0 Lord, for there is no longer any holy man, for truthfulness has vanished from among the children of men.

A Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans (12:6-14).
BRETHREN, we have gifts differing according to the grace that has been given us, such as prophecy to be used according to the degree of faith, or ministry in ministering, or instruction in teaching, or exhortation in encouraging, or almsgiving in being generous with simplicity, or leadership in leading with discretion, or works of mercy in performing them joyfully.
Let love be without pretense. Hate what is evil. Hold to what is good. Love one another with fraternal charity, being the first to honor the other. Be not slothful in zeal; be fervent in spirit, serving the Lord, rejoicing in hope. Be patient in tribulations, persevering in prayer. Relieve the saints’ needs, practicing hospitality. Bless those who persecute you: bless, and do not curse!

ALLELUIA (Tone 5)
Your favor, 0 Lord, I will sing forever; from generation to generation, my mouth will proclaim your faithfulness.
Stichon: For you have said, “My kindness is established forever.” In heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness.

The Holy Gospel According to St. Matthew the Evangelist 9:1-8.
At that time, getting into a boat, Jesus crossed over and came to his own town. And behold, they brought to him a paralytic lying on a pallet. And Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven you.” And behold, some of the Scribes said within themselves, “This man blasphemes.” And Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you harbor evil thoughts in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins” then he said to the paralytic “Arise, take up your pallet and go to your house.” And he arose, and went away to his house. But when the crowds saw it, they were struck with fear, and glorified God who had given such power to men.
