2019-08-11-Sunday Bulletin

Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Bulletin. August 11, 2019.

Ninth Sunday after Pentecost. Jesus Walks on Water.

August 11. Sixth Day of Celebration of the Transfiguration. Commemoration of the Holy Martyr Eupolos the Deacon.

Euplus the Deacon was martyred in Catania of Sicily under Emperor Diocletian on August 12, 304.

In preparation for the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God (Theotokos) we pray the Paraclisis. A Paraclisis or Supplicatory Canon in the Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Churches, is a service of supplication for the welfare of the living. The Most Holy Mother of God’s intercessions are sought through the chanting of the supplicatory canon together with psalms, hymns, and litanies. The Great Paraclisis was composed by Emperor Theodore II Laskaris in the 13th century.

The Feast of the Dormition is preceded by a two-week fast, from August 1 to August 14, called the Dormition Fast. The full fast consists of abstaining from meat, poultry, meat products, dairy products (eggs and milk products), fish, oil, and wine. On the Feast of the Transfiguration on August 6, fish, wine, and oil are allowed.

[15] If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. [16] Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? [17] If any one destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and that temple you are” (1 Corinthians 3:14-17).

“Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, ‘O man of little faith, why did you doubt?’ [32] And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

Vocation View. Saint Paul urges Christian readers to live a life of communion, in mutual love, and in the love that God has given us.  Jesus teaches us the importance and implications of that life of loving communion. Who shall preach and teach it to us today? Pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and monastic life and encourage possible candidates.

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Catholic Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Your Sunday donation envelopes are mailed to you every two months. These envelopes are dated with your envelope number on the back. Please contact the office if you are not registered or did not receive your envelopes. Thank you.

Readings for Sunday, August 11, 2019.

Prokimenon (Tone 8)

Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them; let all round about him bring gifts to the awesome Lord!

Stichon: God is renowned in Judah; in Israel, great is his name.

A Reading from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians (3:9-17).

Brethren, we arc God’s co-workers, you are God’s field, God’s building. According to God’s grace which has been given to me, as a wise builder, I laid the foundation, and another builds upon it. But let everyone he builds upon it. For other foundation no one that which has been laid, which is Jesus the Christ But if anyone builds upon this foundation with gold, silver, gems, wood, hay, straw — the work of each one shall be made manifest: for the Lord’s day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed in fire; and the work of each man, whoever he be, shall be assayed in fire. If the work any man built on the foundation stands, he shall receive a reward; if someone’s work burns down, he shall suffer its loss, yet he himself shall be saved, though only by passing, so to speak, through fire.

Do you not know that you are God’s temple, and that God’s Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys this temple of God, God will destroy him: for holy is God’s temple, and this [holy temple] you are.

 ALLELUIA (Tone 8)

Come, let us rejoice in the Lord; let us sing joyfully to God our Savior!

Stichon: Let us greet his presence with thanksgiving; let us joyfully sing psalms to him.

The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the Evangelist 14:22-34.

At that time Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and cross the sea ahead of him, while he dismissed the crowd. And when he had dismissed the crowd, he went up the mountain alone to pray. And when it was late, he was there alone, but the boat was in the midst of the sea, buffeted by the waves, for the wind was against them. But in the fourth watch of the night Jesus came to them, walking upon the sea. And the disciples, seeing him walk upon the sea, were greatly alarmed, and exclaimed, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. Then Jesus immediately spoke to them, saying, “Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid.” But Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you over the water.” And he said, “Come.” Then Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water to come to Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind, he was afraid; and as he began to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And Jesus at once stretched out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “0 you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind fell. But those who were in the boat came and worshipped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” And crossing over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.
