Hymns: (See our Church’s website for Audio Recordings: holycrossmelkite.org/Melkite-hymns)

Troparion of the Resurrection (Tone 3). Let all in heaven rejoice and all on earth be glade, for the Lord has exerted power with His arm: By death He has trampled upon Death and has become the firstborn from the dead. He has delivered us from the bosom of Hades and has granted to the world great mercy.

Troparion of the Holy Cross (Tone 2). You became a column of endurance and rivaled the forefathers, O Holy One, becoming like Job in your sufferings, like Joseph in your trials, like the bodiless angels though you lived in the flesh. O SIMEON our Holy Father, intercede with Christ God that He may save our souls!

Kondakion of the New Year (Tone 4). O Creator and Master of time and eternity, supersubstantial God of all, O Merciful One : bless the course of this year, and in your boundless mercy, save all those who worship You our one and only Master and who cry out to You in fear : “O Saviour, grant a happy year to all mankind!”

Epistle: 1 Timothy 2:1-7. Amin Abukhader will read this Sunday’s Epistle. If you would like to read the Epistle please contact the office.

Vocation View. Saint Paul is aware of the fact that he is in the line of those who ministered before him and that he is handing on what came from God for His people. In today’s Gospel, Jesus calls upon someone to follow Him and serve in the manner of the Apostles, but the young man, unlike Saint Paul, is not able to give his life to that vocation. Have we encouraged and supported those whom the Lord may be calling to the priesthood or monastic life in our midst by our prayers and support? Have we prayed about our own Vocation?

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more persons to serve our Melkite Catholic Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Readings for Sunday, September 1, 2019

Prokimenon (Tone 2)

My strength and my courage is the Lord, and He has been my Savior.

Stichon: The Lord has chastised me through his teaching, yet He has not delivered me to death.

A Reading from the First Epistle of St. Paul to Timothy (2:1-7).

My dear son Timothy, I urge first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for all men; for kings and for all in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life in all piety and worthy behavior. This is good and agreeable in the sight of God our Savior, Who wishes all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth (Cf. Ez. 18: 23). For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, Himself a man, Christ Jesus, Who gave Himself up as a ransom for all, bearing witness in His own time. To this I have been appointed a preacher and an apostle (I tell the truth, I do not lie), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

 ALLELUIA (Tone 2)

To You we owe our hymn of praise, O God, in Sion; to You must vows be fulfilled, You who hear prayers.

Stichon: O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.

The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the Evangelist 4:16-22

At that time Jesus returned to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and according to His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read. And the volume of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him. And after He opened the volume, He found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; because He has anointed Me; to bring good news to the poor He has sent Me, to proclaim to the captives release, and sight to the blind; to set at liberty the oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” And closing the volume, He gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were  upon Him. But He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” And all bore Him witness, and marveled at the words of grace that came from His mouth.
