Bulletin-January 26, 2020. Fifteenth Sunday After the Holy Cross.

Holy Cross Melkite Catholic Church Bulletin.
Sunday, January 26, 2020. Fifteenth Sunday after the Holy Cross.

On January 26. Commemoration of our Holy Father Xenophon and his relatives.
Xenophon, a member of the Senate in Constantinople, led a holy Christian life with his wife and two sons, Arcadius and John. On their way to Phoenicia to study law, Arcadius and John were shipwrecked and barely managed to save their lives. The parents set out to find them, and on discovering them wearing the habit of monks in Jerusalem, they too entered monastic life in separate monasteries. They died in the beginning of the sixth century.

Thank you to all those who donated for, volunteered at, and attended our New Year’s Eve Party. Income: $8,275 (Ticket sales: $7330, Raffle sales: $945), Expenses: $4109 (Dinner: $2,400, Workers: $360, D.J. $500, Babysitters: $175, Decorations: $434, food and supplies: $240). Raffle, wine, and champagne donations: $2100. We raised a total of $4166, which will go into our building fund.

The Bishop’s Appeal will conclude at the end of March. The annual Bishop’s Appeal is an essential way in which our parish fulfills its duty to our larger Melkite family throughout the U.S. Our Father and Shepherd, Bishop Nicholas asks every Melkite household in the U.S. to give at least $100-$200 each year to support our Eparchy in America. By contributing to the Appeal, each of us responds to Christ’s call to support our Church and helps to fund its vital works, such as publishing SOPHIA magazine, supporting our seminarians for the Priesthood and Diaconate, providing for our elderly priests, teaching the Faith to our children and young adults, and establishing and supporting new missions and outreaches. Those who give a gift of $1000 or more will be automatically enrolled in the Order of Saint Nicholas, the charitable society of our Eparchy.
May God bless you for your generosity. If you did not receive a letter you may send a check to: Melkite Eparchy of Newton 802 Riffle Camp Road, Woodland Park, NJ 02132 or donate online at: Melkite.org

“When they saw it they all murmured, ‘He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.’ [8] And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, ‘Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold.’ [9] And Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham’” (Luke 19:7-9).

A Prayer for Vocations. O Lord God, in every age, You invite men and women to hear Your call to serve You and the Church. We bow before You now, asking that You call forth more men and women to serve our Melkite Catholic Church in America. Give us priests, deacons, monks and nuns, who will lead and guide your holy people. By Your will, bless us with vocations so that we continue to be the church which You called us to be, centuries ago. Let all hear Your voice inviting them to care for and serve Your people. Strengthen us in being disciples of Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son and fishers of men. Inspire in us the spirit and pride of Antioch, our holy heritage. We ask You, O Lover of mankind, to raise up men and women who appreciate what they have received from You and who want to be generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts, to serve others, to give You glory, thanksgiving and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Readings for Sunday, January 26, 2020.
Epistle. 1 Timothy 4:9-15.
Prokimenon (Tone 7): The Lord will give strength to his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace
Stichon: Give to the Lord, you sons of God, give to the Lord glory and praise.

Reading from the First Epistle of St. Paul to Timothy:
My son Timothy, this saying is true and worthy of full acceptance: for we work and are reviled for this reason, that we hope in the living God who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers. Command and teach these things. Let no man despise the fact that you are young, but be an example to the faithful by what you say and do, by love, faith, spirituality and chastity. Until I come, be diligent in reading, exhorting and teaching. Do not neglect the grace that is in you, granted to you as a speaker for God through the laying on of the hands of the priesthood. Meditate on these things, give yourself entirely to them, so that your progress may be evident to all.

ALLELUIA (Tone 7)
It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to Your name, O Most High!
Stichon: To proclaim Your kindness at dawn and Your faithfulness throughout the night.

Luke 19:1-10 (Fifteenth Sunday After the Holy Cross) (Zacchaeus’ Repentance)
The Holy Gospel According To St. Luke the Evangelist.
At that time as Jesus was passing through Jericho, behold there was a man named Zacchaeus; and he was a leading publican, and he was rich. And he was trying to see Jesus, to find out who he was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was going to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down; for I must stay in your house today.” And he made haste and came down, and welcomed him joyfully. And upon seeing it, all began to murmur, saying, “He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” But Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, I give one-half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he, too, is the son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”
